Can anyone guess how long it takes before we formulate a first impression? It’s between 3 and 5 seconds … if we’re lucky … However, a STRONG first impression that tells a story of confidence and competence happens in about 2! That’s why it’s so important to take advantage of this very short window of opportunity; we only get one chance to make it count.
For more than 25 years, I have been educating people from a variety of industries about the connection between image and success. It IS undeniable. Since many of us are doing business in the biggest metropolitan areas of the country, it REALLY counts.
The term “Dressing for Success” is pretty much a terminology that has been used over and over again and can be different for every industry. Unless you have been living under a rock, we have ALL heard this term. However, the difference between dressing for success and dressing WITH success is HUGE. Knowing what looks great on us, what a good fit is, and where to find the best choices for our lifestyle is the key to dressing WITH success.
Once we have these tools in our back pocket, we are able to both dress FOR success, and open the doors to endless possibilities for our lives.
We must create our own ‘signature style’ through our mode of dressing. This sends out the message we want to convey, and ultimately conveys a very powerful statement to the world around us, “I am BOTH confident AND competent.”
Before you leave to go shopping, take an inventory and decide what is missing from your wardrobe or needs updating (you know those black trousers that have been to the cleaners one too many times) and make a list. This way, you know exactly what you need and will not be tempted to buy anything on impulse. And, for goodness sakes, if this isn’t your strong suit, take a trusted friend along to keep you honest. You and your wallet will be very grateful!
