It’s one of the most detrimental things that can happen and the downfall of many entrepreneurs. It’s been one of the biggest reasons I haven’t accomplished more, or succeeded in the past. It’s very enticing, sometimes addictive and can be extremely destructive. It’s called, Shiny Object Syndrome, or SOS.
I have hundreds of books, CD’s, DVDs, programs and courses I’ve purchased. I never finished most of them and some I never even started. A few weren’t the best fit, however most of them work and contain so much good information, if I’d really applied what they have to offer, but I didn’t give them a chance. If I didn’t get immediate results, I was on to the next thing that I thought was the answer – the next shiny object that caught my eye. So many times I’ve tricked myself into thinking this was the key to my success only to find out it was actually keeping me from it.
I used to think that by just reading or hearing something was all I needed to get results.
Sometimes I tried it once or twice and if I didn’t get the results I wanted, then I thought it didn’t work. Seriously, what was I thinking!? As a former figure skating coach, you’d think that I would know better because I saw this happen over and over with skaters.
The parents would have their child start taking lessons from one instructor, then another and another until they had gone through most all the instructors looking for the “One” who would make their child a star. Instead of sticking with one instructor long enough to see real results, they did what is called, “Pro hopping.” They didn’t give it a real chance and when their child took longer than they wanted to land a jump, they blamed it on the instructor. If their child had a bad day or week, failed a skating test and God forbid they didn’t do well in a competition, it was on to the next instructor – the new shiny object. These skaters usually never went very far and ended up quitting.
The path to success isn’t always pretty; It has obstacles, takes consistent effort and time. (If you’re sick of chasing shiny buttons? Go to the OffBeat Business Event Calendar for solid business success guidance in group settings and FASTER results than learning on your own.)
