Feel a headache, wince in pain, pop an aspirin. Even though that may work once in awhile, that routine is putting your health at risk, not solving the problem. For a myriad of reasons, many Americans believe it’s normal to experience at least 1-2 headaches each month. More than 4% of us suffer from frequent headaches, or headaches that occur at least 180 days of the year. As a matter of fact, over 83,100,000 people search Google using the search term ‘headache’ each day.
Headaches slow us down and even stop us in our tracks, but some people go through so much of their life in pain, they no longer believe they can be free of it. This impacts our workload, our family life and overall quality of life – let alone the economic and social burden for the people surrounding the headache pain sufferer.
While immediate relief may in fact come in the form of a pill, it doesn’t always work so easily. A whole new problem emerges when a headache must be suppressed with additional doses of pain relievers. Over the course of my career, I’ve discovered – through extensive clinical research, education and experience – that headache recurrences can be completely resolved, not merely medicated. Real solutions must start before the headache does, not after.
Would it surprise you to know that scientists have identified over 300 causes for headaches?
We’re covered in pain-sensitive structures – skin, muscles, arteries. Our facial nerves and upper cervical nerves produce headaches when irritated or injured.
The most common of these headaches include:
- Cervicogenic- problems within the neck
- Muscle-tension- neck and upper back muscular spasms
- Post-traumatic- following head/neck trauma, i.e. whiplash
- Drug-induced- from analgesic overuse
Chiropractors successfully help thousands of people everyday experience safe, effective, long-term relief from headache pain. Most headaches have a spinal, muscular or habitual component that a chiropractor has been trained to identify and treat. As many as 10–25% of patients initiate chiropractic care for the relief of headaches.
