Did you know that you can choose what to think? I remember the days before I learned that. I thought people were victims of their circumstances, and if the situation was pathetic, then without a miracle there was no way out.
Then one day I realized that thoughts were not inherently RIGHT just because my experience told me they were. I’ll never forget realizing that I hated the way I sounded to ME, and if I sounded so negative, critical, and overbearing to myself – how AWFUL I must have sounded to others!! It was a big wake-up call, and it changed my life.
See, I got married to my first husband at 18, and it wasn’t good. He became a violent, angry man, and I became a very strong, defiant young mother. By the time I was 20 I found myself staying at Hope’s Door women’s shelter with my two-year old son. NO one had known the life I led, and NO one was going to tell me how to live. Through a broken back recovery and the poverty that our drug-infused life had created, I thought I had a corner on the pain market, and everyone else could just shut up. And I told people that regularly!
One day I was driving down the road and thinking about a negative situation. I was griping someone out in my mind when I had an epiphany. It didn’t matter if I was right or wrong about how I felt – I had to CHOOSE to focus on something that didn’t make my stomach sick. What my mind was rehearsing wasn’t even my problem! I could see that I had become so accustomed to my misery I was borrowing misery from other people!!
That’s easy to do, actually, and we all know people who live like that.
Fast forward to the mercy and love of my Savior Jesus Christ, and I’m a different woman today – inside and out. I no longer accept every thought that comes into my head. Now I know that I’m supposed to take my thoughts ‘captive’ to the ‘obedience of Christ’ which means, in a nutshell, I need to watch what I’m focused on. And whether you believe in Jesus or not, the same is true for you. Miserable people sound miserable, healthy people sound healthy, broke people sound broke and sick people sound sick. Kids in trouble? Listen to the words being spoken. We ALL create our worlds with our words. It’s supernatural co-creation. We can either repeat continuously in our hearts and minds everything that the experience is telling us is true and speak that, OR, if we have promises to stand on, I can thank God for the Truth that exceeds my experience and watch the tide turn.
It’s the same for your marketing.
There is no marketing solution for “We’re almost as good as the other guy.” You ARE the best, and if you can’t find your value in comparing yourself with another business, than you had better start considering how exactly your company was built to solve the problems that exist, because your greatness is probably THAT close to you. So close you have to dig a little.
In 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth, John Maxwell says there is a secret to the ability to ‘pause’ and reflect. We get focused on the doing and spend little time in the thinking, but that’s where the power is. As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.
When people get focused on the grind, stay focused on getting out of the grind, and focus on the lack that wears you out because of the grind – you get more of what you focus on.
Focused attention on what makes your products and services amazing – and then learning how to convey that with talent and skill – is the gold that moves your company forward and closer to achievement.
Here’s an action plan I put together to help my clients get the most out of our information marketing products:
- What does every other ‘so-and-so company’ say about themselves?
- What do you want your company to be known for?
- What language sets you up for that? Short and to the point.
- What is the avatar of your ideal client – not necessarily the one you are attracting NOW, but the one you want?
Fill out my questionnaire here – FREE and easy.
Consider different ways you might use the language you feel is necessary –
- Short statements?
- Straight talk?
This can be an overwhelming time for business owners – or it can be an exciting journey into your next step that takes you closer to the vision you have for your life. Focus on your best, work towards improving the language you are saying automatically, and get excited about the growth you’ll experience when you determine to keep your head right.
